In this SSRS Tutorial I will show you how to Create Data Source in SSRS 2012.
You have two ways to set up Data Source in SSRS Report. First one is to Create Share Data Source which allows use it to any report and that's is the most frequently used option. The second way is to embed a Data Source inside a report, that cannot be shared with other reports.
First I will show you how to add shared Data Source to the Report. You can Create Short Data Source in Solution Explorer in SharedDataSources folder.
To Create Shared Data Source I right click on it and I will select Add New Data Source.
Now I have got Shared Data Source Properties window and below I will type Name - in my case it will be AdventureWorksDW.
Next I will select Type - in my case it will be Microsoft SQL Server.
When I selected my options I am going to Edit button and click it. Now you should see the Connection Properties window where I will select Server Name - in my case it will be just local host. Below, you have another option Connect to a database - in my case I will select from the drop down box AdventureWorksDW2012. Next you have to click Test Connection - it should be succeeded.
In the Solution Explorer in a Shared Data Source when we click it - we can see that new Shared Data Source appears.
Now I will go to Report Data pane on the left side and I right click on Data Sources. As you can see there is a option - Add Data Source just click on it.
At the Report Data Source Properties window in the Name field I will type - AdventureWorksDW. Next I will choose the option below - use shared data source reference and from the drop down box I select my shared data source. Click OK.
On the left side at the Report Data pane you can see that Data Source was linked with my report.
The second way to add Data Source is to create in Report Data pane. I right click on the folder Data Source on the left side and I select Add Data Source, like before. The same like in previous example you have to specify the name - but this time I will use Embedded Connection which means it cannot be shared. Also I need to specify type and provided details.
I hope this SSRS Tutorial was helpful.
