Today (29th of October 2014) I have accidently discovered that our YouTube videos were downloaded (stolen) and published under a different channel since September 2014 so almost two months. The channel contained videos from several other channels. I have contact one of the other channels and we trying to shut down the channel and just now (after 10h) some good news.
Recently we have made a decision to incorporate 250+ YouTube videos my member videos (leave 70+ for free). This attack hurts us quite a lot as we spent over 3 years on our website (without any profits) and when we created the membership we stopped our full time jobs, took our savings and I accepted that we will make a loss every month for about 6 to 12 months so as you can imagine the theft of our videos or more precisely re-upload under a different YouTube channel was quite of a shock to us.
I can hardly believe there are still people who think it is ok to do that.
No wondering YouTube has made really funny (at least for me) learning videos about copyright.
YouTube Video Download
Coming back to the main topic. How can you protect your YouTube Videos from download? At this point in time the answer is you can't. There are plenty of add-in browsers that will download the video.
The only thing you could do is put a logo in let's say bottom right corner with info that you do not wish for anyone to download it. This will not disallow downloads but at least it should reduce number of people who will actually upload your videos under a different YouTube channel name.
Don't use YouTube :) For many that is out of the question so I'm sorry to give the bad news but you can't stop it as long as you use YouTube.
If you are in the minority and you don't have to use YouTube than you can actually protect your videos.
There a number of paid video hosting companies like Vimeo, Vistia, DailyMotion (free) but they suffer from the same drawback as you can simply download the video.
Many people will say "If you can watch it then you can download it". I will disagree! I have found VdoCipher that offers encrypted video streaming (My VdoCipher Review) and at this point in time NONE of the browser add-in is able to download the video so you get 100% protection from download?
Protect from screen recording
Some will say you can watch it so you can record the screen without downloading it. Yes but really; how many people will do such an effort? Besides quality will be much lower which in my case does matter.
How to protect it? In my case I will send an email (today) to VdoCipher as they offer dynamic watermark so I initially I just want to "inject" logo in bottom right corner but later on I want to replace it with member info like Name, Email Address and Expiry date. People can still do it and I don't mind if they do it for their own use as long as they see the expiry date.
Of course someone can upload it but because it contains member info it essentially would tell everyone who has stolen the video so I would say at least 98% people would think twice before doing that.
Extra benefit in my case is that membership is single user so it should discourage people from sharing the account.
YouTube Paid Channel
You may think that if you move your videos to YouTube paid channel you are safe? Wrong! It's even worse as people (at this point in time) can do 14 days trial and download ALL your videos so you actually encourage them to use the trial and download ALL videos which is why I will not use YouTube Paid Channel.
Besides YouTube paid channel fees is a total rip off which I have written about in my YouTube paid channel review.
Hope that helps and good luck in surviving in the online jungle :)
