Below I will share steps that I took to install sql server 2012 BI edition and describe options I chose which hopefully someone will find useful.
Before I started the installation I downloaded ISO image of SQL Server BI Edition together with my license key (part of Microsoft subscription that I have) and installed all possible window updates.
Important: Ensure you install all windows updates including optional ones and check for more updates until there is nothing to install. This process may take a few attempts before you install all available window updates.
Otherwise you might get the following message during installation
"The operation system on this computer does not meet the minimum requirements for SQL server 2012. For windows Vista or Windows server 2008 operating system, service pack 2 or later is required. For windows 7 or windows server 2008 R2, service pack 1 or later is required"
I started setup from DVD Drive (iso image) and click Yes when I was prompt to give User Account Control.
I clicked installation on the left side and clicked "New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation"
Next steps checkes if my machine is ready for installation and I got Passed on all items.
Below I got product updates screen
Below is setup support rules screen that shows two warnings:
1) "Computer domain controller" normally this is Passed but in my case I got warning because I installed domain controller that is required for SharePoint installation (I use one virtual machine to install everything).
2) Windows firewall warning. This is usually ok as you don't want to switch off firewall but later on you might have to add firewall exception in order to peform certain actions like remote connections.
I select "Perform a new installation of SQL Server" and click next
I enter licence key and click next
I accept terms and send feature and click next
I go with "SQL Server Feature Installation" that allows me to install different instances of SQL Server 2012 and I click next
My installation choices are below:
In here I go with database engine installation and go with sharepoint installation with SSAS and DQS with MDS.
Installation rules. I passed and clicked ok
In instance configuration I go with default instance so I can use localhost
I have enought disk space to install sql server
Below are my server configurations
I go with windows authentication only and add myself as admin
for SSAS instance in SQL Server 2012 I have two choice and I go with Tabular Mode and add myself as admin.
Reporting services is install only as I went with Sharepoint installation.
