I thought I’ll document and share a DAX scenario from Ian Y. who contact me on LinkedIn asking for advice.
The problem was that DAX Datesytd function was not working as expected with Year End Date argument which is used to change fiscal year beginning/end in the calendar.
The argument that Ian provided was “1/10” for October 1st and this worked in Power BI Desktop but didn’t work in Power BI service.
When I look at my first thought was that Power BI Desktop and Service is reading it differently, Desktop correctly as October 1st and Service as January 10th, so I set up a test Power BI file and tried different date format and “Oct 1” worked which Ian confirmed.
This probably is a nice example of setting up a best practice for date format arguments and use at least three letter month name to avoid confusion and unexpected behaviour.
Take care
